I’m hoping someone here can give me some clarity because I feel like I’m being ambushed. I just got off the phone with a collector from Gragil Associates, and the whole thing has left me feeling really uneasy and confused.
They are calling about a medical bill from a few years ago. My main issue is that I never received anything in the mail from them – no letter, no statement, nothing. The first I heard of it was this phone call. The representative was very short with me and kept pushing for me to set up a payment plan immediately over the phone, saying it would stop things from “escalating.” When I asked them to send me something in writing showing the debt details, they became pretty difficult and said they had already sent it (which I never got).
I’m not trying to avoid a legitimate bill, but I also don’t want to pay something without seeing the proof. I have no idea what the original amount was versus what they are saying now with fees or interest.
Is this normal for them? Has anyone else dealt with Gragil Associates where they started with heavy phone calls before proper paperwork? I’m thinking I need to send a formal letter asking for proof of the debt, but I’m not sure if I should answer their calls at all in the meantime. Any advice on how to handle this step by step would be a huge help.
